Thanks, I agree with your statements. XFCE is reliable and solid to the point where frequent updates aren't needed.

I'm hoping for a complete drop-in replacement of linux mint debian edition Mate version, but based on devuan without any systemd shit. That's my dream. With some kind of better RDP/VNC capability baked in, since the hacky ones I've used to make that work in LMDE are not that great.

Yeah, I'm necro'ing a thread, but so what.

If the build-chain is there, you should be able to compile whatever DE you want.

I would expect something lightweight and with low dependencies as a default, but I'm pretty flexible.

Compiling GNOME, of any stripe, has always been a nightmare. I doubt Gnome3 is any better than previous versions of Gnome. With Gnome3 and KDE5 becoming more and more reliant on SystemD internals, I'd be fine with neither being supported, but I'm probably a major outlier.

I think I've heard that Xfce will be default, but what I'm really hoping is that MATE will be available during installation.

MATE sure is available, I've been using Devuan for a while now.

Really? I want Cinnamon. I just spent some time with Mate and XFCE on a slower machine. Cinnamon is showing some real polish compared to them. It was worlds faster than XFCE, which was borderline unusable. Mate was a little better.
