What about shot guns?
[–] clamhurt_legbeard ago
shotguns are shotguns from the factory and if you go below 18 inch barrel its a short barrel shotgun

What if you take the stock off, cut the barrel, put on a brace

Not to what if you to death, but I’ve seen some with collapsing shoulder stocks, https://picturearchive.gunauction.com/2017949/9531036/106_5050.jpg_thumbnail1.jpg how do those fit in?

The ATF currently measures overall length with collapsible and folding stocks fully open. Being that they make their own rules, this can change at any time, but that configuration looks like it's ok. Minimum of a 16" barrel and at least 26" from muzzle to the end of the stock.

Gotcha, well I still wanted to make a wooden stock but maybe I’ll tinker with something wire down the line. Thanks again gun sage.

Huh, ain’t that some beautiful regulation. Thanks!

Or how about this beautiful regulation?... Let's say you already own an AR-15 rifle that can't be converted into a pistol (see my next door post). It's stored responsibly in your safe. You want to get an AR-15 pistol, but don't yet have one (and don't yet have a lower received that can be made into a pistol). You figure "I'll get the parts kit for a pistol now and get the stripped lower next month." So you get the pistol parts kit and store it responsibly in your safe.
Congratulations, you have just committed a felony. You see, the ATF considers that as long as you have the parts to convert your rifle into a Short Barrel Rifle (SBR), the parts don't have any other "useful purpose", and they are "placed in close proximity", that's really just as good as creating an SBR. It does not matter that you have not and don't ever plan to assemble these parts into an SBR. As far as the ATF is concerned, you've already made it.

Holy shit that is spectacular. But I dunno man, I heard that gun is fully semi automatic so it’s pretty dangerous and there’s no reason you need one to begin with.

You want some additional beautiful regulation?... A factory rifle (or a lower that was first built into a rifle) can never be converted into a pistol. A factory pistol (or a lower that was first built as a pistol) can be converted into a rifle. That second example (pistol that was converted to a rifle) can also be re-converted to a pistol.
That leads to some really strange examples; You could have two identical weapons in front of you, identical parts, accessories, etc (different serial numbers on each lower, of course). One might be perfectly legal to convert to a pistol (because it started as a pistol) and one will be a felony if converted to a pistol (because it started as a rifle).

So going back to my AR 7, what if I just don’t put the stock on it? Like I take it to the range, unpack it from the stock, put the barrel on it and just shoot it off a sandbag. Did I just commit a felony? XD
