This is what it looks like when hurricanes blow over trees in North Carolina, but the pulled up soil has a circular shape. I bet the lawn was laid-down sod a few months previously.

It kinda looks like they didn't do any prep on the ground at all - just threw the sod down over the dirt after the house was finished.
