People burn more calories reading than watching TV (not much more, but it happens). Even though both activities are sedentary, reading requires more energy to process information.

The reason chess players burn that much calories isn't because they have a more active brain, as much as it is them having a very significant adrenaline boost while in competition. I think their blood pressure can easily get into the 180/120 range so not that surprising that they burn a lot of calories.
However once they get out of the competitive zone things drop back to normal. They might have extra appetite on that day, just like you and I would if we had performed extra, but otherwise they don't eat more than their body tells them to.

Personally, I think yea. And I think a butt ton. Partly because I'm dumb. But also because I like to know things. And I don't exercise. I also think I'm in really decent shape because I dream about doing shit and think about doing shit. Gotta keep your noodle wigglin.
