.223 for a dollar a shot? How does that happen?

What do you mean? From what I've observed a lot of the cheaper .223 ammo is sold out. Maybe you know of somewhere cheap? I love the idea of being able to take 300 shots for about 15 bucks (22LR).

Oh yeah I forgot about the price gouging. No, you're right and it's a decent choice I rented one at the range a few times, not the ca version but I'm sure it's the same. My brother has the .223 version and it's a workhorse. How's .22 looking out there?

I don't have a cucked one but I really like mine. I've only really used one kind of ammo, Just plain cheap lead bullets, and have had very few malfunctions which is pretty good for .22s.

As far as .223 being $1 a round it was ~.16 a week ago for steel cased. You should still be able to find fancy stuff for .35-.50 a round, Which isn't a bad price for what you're getting but you don't need that for plinking obviously.

I've only shot brass before. Will steel jam or is it fine? Do you have a recommendation of where to buy steel .223? If I can pick it up for .16 a round, I would seriously consider getting a 223.

The only real disadvantage I know of is some people claim steel will wear your chamber out faster but the money you save from buying steel over brass would buy you multiple barrels. Besides that I don't think there's any other disadvantages to it as long as you don't plan on reloading.

I would keep checking ammoseek https://ammoseek.com/ammo/223-remington and it looks like sgammo.com might start selling again the middle of this week.

I would probably wait a couple weeks just to see what happens with ammo prices. A lot of the online stores aren't even selling right now because they're so far behind.

I used to have a Steven's model 200 in .308 and it would jam anytime I shot anything other than brass through it. Russian Amma was guaranteed Jam.

Build your own, both rifle and ammo.

You say you're in California. DON'T end up on a list.

Something tells me you shoot a cracked our dindu with a .22 and all you’ll do is make him mad

Skip the .22 and instead get an AR pattern rifle chambered in a pistol caliber round like .45 or 9mm. Best of both worlds. Cheaper ammo costs but still effective as a personal or home defense weapon.

It feels cheap, and the mags are a bitch to load, but it shoots well enough. Personally I prefer a 1022, but I get the appeal of the the MP 15 22 for an inexpensive training rig. It's all polymer, and feels like it, but it's still a fun shooter. I would never count on it, or any 22, for home defense though.

If you want a rifle that's cheap to feed and can be used for home defense, maybe consider the Ruger PC Carbine.

  • It's chambered in 9mm, so you can count on it for home defense.
  • It uses glock mags which are easy to find, easy to load, and can be used in most 9mm Glock handgun, so you won't need to blow money on different mags for different guns if you also end up getting a 9mm Glock, like a G19 for example.
  • It's CA legal.
  • It's a takedown rifle, making it easy to store or transport.
  • It's fairly inexpensive to purchase. I"ve seen them as cheap as about $500.
  • Bulk FMJ 9mm is cheap. Not as cheap as 22LR, but still much cheaper than 5.56.

Thanks dude you made some excellent points. I was literally just looking at the ruger 10 minutes ago. I really like it. Man it's crazy how ammo is sold out everywhere I look.

The other nice thing about the Ruger PCC is 9mm is one of the easiest and least expensive rounds to reload. You can even cast your own lead bullets and not have to worry about jacketing them. And the casings, because they're not necked down like a rifle casing such as 5.56, can be reloaded almost endlessly.

I've been eyeing it since it came out. I was hoping they'd release a 10mm and/or a 45acp version, but so far, no dice. I might just have to get the 9mm version in the mean time.

Edit: btw I have shot one, I'm not trying to recommend a gun I have no trigger time with. It shoots really well, and is pretty comfortable.

If you are going .22 you might as well get the Ruger 10/22. Save getting an AR for when you are getting an actual AR.
