Exactly what I was thinking. At the very least, anyone who downloads it could be tagged/targeted for surveillance.

Sadly this was my first thought as well. Anyone putting their faith in a tool like this is going to have a bad time.

It is open-source at least. That doesn't mean it's safe, but at least it's inspect-able.

I hesitate to download and install anything I'm not sure of.

Well it's year 2015 and it's your job to "be sure". Educate yourself on it if you think it might be useful at some point.

Then of course, nobody is forcing you to and you could just ignore it before your inner "unsure" talks for you.

That's a ridiculous expectation that will only become more ridiculous over time. People can't be experts on everything.

That's a novel way to put it, thanks for the reply.

Looks like it's open-source, so you can at least inspect it. I'd be wary too, but if you have the right skillset, you can make a reasonable investigation as to whether it's doing something shady or not.

At the end of the day, being wary is the right call

Do you use google, microsoft, or apple? If you answered yes to any of these questions the NSA has a back door and surveillance malware.

You think Linux is safe? Think again. OpenBSD should be reasonably secure, but not against NSA. Nothing is completely secure. To keep NSA from listening in and tracking is pretty much undoable. It CAN be done but it's not worth the hassle unless you're into some serious shit. And by hassle I mean serious hassle. Like never using your secret computer at home, never bringing your or any cellphone with you when you use TOR/tails over some public/hacked private WIFI somewhere no way near your home, wearing a cap and make sure you don't look up into the cameras. You should also rip out the harddrive and boot from a DVD. You can only use the same WIFI once. Randomize locations. NEVER log in anywhere. You should also maintain a "normal" online presence as well to not arouse suspicion by suddenly changing your habits. This is just for starters. It's actually even more complicated than that, but you get the drift. Sound fun?
