Other sources which often are not the government (much less the IRS) and which the government often knows nothing about. The government simply is not that competent nor, frankly, should anyone want it to be. Just to give one small example on each of the income and deduction sides:
On the income side, some clients, especially those whose payments are small amounts fail to properly report their payments on a 1099, so the government would have no knowledge of it without being aware of all bank deposits and what they were for. But it is still taxable income which I have occasionally needed to report and on which I needed to pay taxes.
On the deduction side, the government has no way of knowing the mileage which can be included in a medical expenses deduction. That does not apply to a large number of taxpayers, but it does apply to some. There have been years it saved me money.
