I've heard near death experience stories where the teller recounts hearing crackling fire and screaming and the smell of sulfur. Those people are ones that "changed their ways" after the experience.
There have been children and adults who have talked about seeing the fire and demons too. I'm not sure how much I believe many of the stories though. It could easily be your mind making sense of what is happening by using images it knows. But, there have been many accounts of heaven and hell in near death experiences.
I'll be more surprised when I read about someone coming back from seeing Valhalla or something. The Christian stories seem too much like a coping mechanism. But, I guess Valhalla would too now that I think about it.

Valhalla is only for the mightiest of warriors! Do not taint their existence!
