2020-02-19 | Hackers trick Tesla into accelerating 50 mph using 2-inch tape strip - Business Insider

'The McAfee researchers Steve Povolny and Shivangee Trivedi stuck 2 inches of black tape on a 35-mph speed sign, slightly elongating the middle line in the "3."'

'Two security researchers managed to trick two Teslas into accelerating well past the speed limit by fooling their camera systems into misreading a speed sign. ', "The safety of Tesla's autopilot systems is under close scrutiny."

'As the car approached the altered sign it misread it as 85 mph — and started to accelerate by 50 mph. '

'Last year the tech billionaire claimed the company would have a "feature-complete full self-driving" vehicle by the end of 2019. '

McAfee disclosed the research to Tesla and MobilEye EyeQ3, the company that provides the Tesla 2016 models with their camera systems, last year.

MobilEye EyeQ3 dismissed the research.

Tesla's newer models use proprietary cameras, and MobilEye EyeQ3 has released newer versions of its cameras that McAfee tested and said were not fooled by the modified sign.

For those unconvinced that 'input only modification' constitutes 'hacking', the above paragraphs indicate that a change of cameras (hardware/firmware/software) solves the issue, thus proving the point that the previous version was 'hacked'.

We aren't talking about 'simple' cameras that only take pictures. It's the ML/AI firmware/software behind them that is in question. For a similar problem regarding 'input only modifications', please see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SQL_injection

Why the fuck does a speed-hold mode even need cameras or GPS? What the fuck is wrong with "See the speed I'm doing RIGHT NOW? Keep it at that"?

Wait, so Tesla's can actually read the text on signage? That's actually pretty cool.

It's not special. A Honda Accord and many other cars can do the same thing.

It can also recognize your face and record everywhere it drives and it can track the life of it's owner. Definitely not creepy features designed by pedophiles.
