There isn't a necessary tension between rationality and emotions, and people who blindly believe that rationality is superior, and call themselves "rational", are generally doing so because they have emotions about who they are.

The people who do best in life don't fight their emotions, they learn to use them in productive ways.

So I dislike this article. The problem with trigger warnings and the left is the way they abuse emotions.

Excerpt

In some classrooms professors are asked to give “trigger alerts” when material is coming that might in some way be experienced as oppressive.

I believe this trend is anti-liberation.

I think it misses the point. The full quote continues

It further empowers power holders, asking authorities (in this case, teachers) to take even more responsibility to monitor and control. It disempowers those who have suffered oppression, by assuming they can’t stand up for themselves when an insult appears.

I think they're conflating two different notions of "trigger." There's the Tumblr definition of trigger, which is synonymous with insult. However, what many people are talking about are legitimate trauma triggers. Students with PTSD as a result of rape or abuse can be "triggered" by literature and experience the symptoms of PTSD when exposed to specific stimuli.

This is an instance where there is a legitimate concern, but overuse of the term by Tumblrinas has been regressive in the area, similar to how the DSM-recognized gender dysphoria has been made into a joke by people claiming they should be accepted as "Cat-kin"

We shouldn't think of "trigger" as "insult." We already have a word for that: "insult." And, no, we don't need to warn people that a book may insult them. However, if the book may genuinely cause victims of trauma to experience severe distress, then a warning may be appropriate.

Nice comment. At least now, people are starting to calm down and talk again. :)
