You are better off taking red yeast rice extract. Sorry for your loss.

Cholesterol is fixed pretty quickly by exercise. Steroids are very bad for cholesterol.

Heart disease is caused by glycated cholesterol molecules. They don't go away through exercise.
Glycation is caused by sugar. Don't eat sugar. (P.S. All carbs are sugar)

The stuff they give people for cholesterol is so much worse for them than just having moderately elevated cholesterol. Plus cholesterol itself is not bad for you, its a secondary byproduct of the true problem which is diet. Cholesterol is the repair molecule and janitor of your body and its production is increased when your body responds to illness, stress or injury.
The drugs they give you wreak havoc on your kidneys and liver. The mentality is like putting people on chemo for things like food poinsoning.

Sorry to hear that man. That being said, kidney failure is not a commonly associated complication with Lipitor (liver failure is). Lipitor is (or was) the most commonly prescribed medicine in the US...and is in most cases, is handled without any problems other than muscle weakness and/or elevated liver enzymes.
But you are correct, in saying that exercise is an alternative to the medicine.
