PPE is absolutely essential. I worked at a paper mill as an intern for a period of time. Most machines there (think huge motors and steam blowers) were loud enough to instantly damage your hearing if you took out your ear plugs. At the main paper machine, if you were going to be there for more than a few minutes, you would need earplugs AND over ear protection.

Also don't forget gas monitors when in relevant areas. One breath of H2S is enough to kill at high concentrations. There was a part of the mill which was hitting > 200 (way more than lethal) ppm on a daily basis. I know this for a fact because I installed the sensors. Why they sent an intern into that part of the mill and gave him that task is anyone's guess.

Most import of all though is Don't Be Stupid because your PPE will not protect against that. For example, at this mill, there was a dumbass who would stand under the 15 ton paper roll to cut it off the production machine as it was hoisted away to another part of the mill by a huge crane. One day, the crane slipped and this guy, who was standing under this 30 foot long, 10 foot tall roll of paper, got completely fucking annihilated. The roll might as well have been sheet steel, because he in his entirety ended up squashed flat. You know what happens when 5'6" man is compressed into a millimeter thick sheet? He goes fucking everywhere like a tick getting stepped on, except there are organs and shit and bone chips along with the blood, and it all gets sprayed in a fine mist as body parts get crushed and rolled over and explode from the inhuman pressure. This man's story is now part of the mill's safety training material. Don't be like this man.

I had a job where I worked in confined spaces with noxious fumes so we used air monitoring equipment and ventilation setups all the time. Very important.

Good point I've heard some horror stories about that.

I see lawn guys using weed whackers and edgers w/o eye protection. Asking for trouble.
