Even though you're in Arizona, don't name the cat River Phoenix.

No one knows what River was doing on a low-profile power boat, adrift on Lake Havasu this weekend. Very few cats long for the lake’s open waters. Now River – a name given to her by the Western Arizona Humane Society – longs for it even less so. River, a brown, American shorthair breed, is believed to have stowed away on a boat before it left port on Saturday, nestled in a side-panel at the front of the ship. The boat fell victim to waves near a sandbar north of Lake Havasu City, where the vessel filled with water and sank to the bottom. A Mohave County Sheriff’s Department’s Search and Rescue team responded quickly, and contacted John Zucalla, of Dive Time Recovery, to recover the boat. Zucalla and his son were already on the lake when the call came, and he arrived at the scene within an hour. Once the ship was ashore, Zucalla took it to a mechanic to have the lake water flushed from within the boat and the engine. They found River in her compartment, and had to cut away a section of the boat’s upholstery to extract her. “The cat was trapped, hungry, wet and scared,” Zucalla said. “I’ve been doing this for 15 years, and I’ve never found a live animal on a sunken boat. She was down there for an hour – It’s miraculous that she survived.” In any sunken ship, there are often pockets of air that are unable to escape the insides of the vessel, usually in closed off areas and panels. River may have used one of these air pockets to survive until the boat was extracted from the water. Zucalla contacted the boat’s owner, Genaro Rudaldava, who told him that his family doesn’t own a cat. The identity of River’s owner is unknown. “It was one of those old-style power boats, with a big compartment in the front end,” Zucalla said. “You pack your cooler and all of your supplies into the front end. The cat could have climbed in and gotten trapped there when (Rudaldava) left from Orange County, California on Friday or Saturday. This is a miracle – that we were on the lake when the Sheriff’s Department called us, and we found the wreck in time.” Animal Control retrieved River and held her for two days before bringing her to the Humane Society’s intake center. She has been there since Monday Morning. “When she first came in, she was very scared,” said WAHS employee Tasha Draper. “Now she’s started to open up. She got very lucky.” River was uninjured when she was brought to the humane society, and now eats a diet of dry cat food. She wasn’t microchipped, as most of WAHS’s animals are, which makes tracking down her owners more difficult for the shelter. River’s owners will have five days to claim her. If they do not, River will be sent to the WAHS adoption center in Havasu and will become available for adoption. The WAHS intake center had 15 cats in its custody as of Monday.>
