Why not let them register but confine them to /v/debriefing or /v/redditdefectors. Then we could interrogate them to see if they are fleeing SJW tyranny to build a new life here, or if they are SJW spies who should be SHOT.
[–] BuddyLeeDontPlayNSt 2 points 24 points 26 points (+26|-2) ago
I'm OK with it, actually. Let the people who were smart enough to get the fuck out of Reddit over here, then restrict registering. This way you have (for the most part) intelligent conversations and content for a while. It's just up to the smart people to create content and discuss things. No longer can we be lurkers, but we must contribute for this new system to thrive.
That's why I like Voat.

I thinking having voats weighted by reputation points would help....the orginial users/early adapters and conspiracy theorists who detected censorship earlier at Reddit should get more rep points and we she have the ability to down voat the rep points of those who act as shills....then when a brigade of shill robots come over here we can keep them with low voat power for longer and each one of our voats counts as more...it is meritocratic as opposed to one voat per shill (democratic), no matter how low IQ the shill has proven himself to be,
therefore when we see gullible people who believe the government propaganda on ISiS hook-line sinker...we can keep those gullible or shillples from gaining power here....then when we want to have TPP on the frontpage...it can be so....when we want information linking the US government to ISIS on the frontpage...it can be so.
it is possible that Voat is already too controlled for this to take place...free people will have to make a alternative info community at some point that make sit a little harder for paid corporate propaganda brigades to take over.

I think the current policy will go a long way toward that. Reddit has a few endemic problems that can't be fixed now, because they live in denial. First, they put a person in charge who has a lot of talent, but apparently a great deal of baggage. I can't imagine why they did that. Then they fire someone who is immensely popular to put the exclamation point to their previous idiocy. Next, they manage to enrage many of the volunteers who assisted them to build the site by going over their heads.
It's now a corporate bureaucracy, and the problem is that their product is really the goodwill of the people who go there. If nobody likes it, nobody goes there. It's a fragile and difficult situation, made worse by every recent step being a misstep.
All of the self-justification in the world does no good if you lose your user base, and they are.
Now to Voat.
Voat simply needs to remain true to its current principles, and the Voaters need to recognize what a treasure it is to have a free speech forum like this. Freedom of speech, no censorship unless local laws so require, no corporate intervention, and LOTS of interaction from the developers (Please, Atko!!) that goes both ways. All of us have a right to speak up, but nobody has a right to harm anyone else. It's speech, after all--not machine guns at 40 paces.

I am ACUTELY aware that every time I click I am costing the the voat admins money, and they have no money.
This scares me.
This is why we are in 'invite only' mode..at least in part.
I want to post, comment upvoat etc but .... what is the cost? I know I am not paying apart from my pathetic attempt in producing content.
I want VOAT to succeed but I fear MONEY may kill it in the end?

Can you quickly break down what this thing you linked to is?
[–] honorkell [S] 0 points 9 points 9 points (+9|-0) ago
Users or mods on reddit (SRS?) create a tool to automatically log where users on reddit post. This mass tagging list then can be given to any mod of any subreddit who wants it. Made a non--pc comment or thought a year ago? You're tagged forever. Now whoever has this list (mods) can choose to silence you no matter what the content of your latest post/idea is. You've been ghettoized. Combine that with this allegedly admin-approved system of automatically removing comments with certain words, and you have a system of effectively and automatically "cleaning" reddit of all speech that isn't in line with what reddit thinks is acceptable.

I have been off reddit for a while now. WTF happened? What a shitshow!
I feel like Voat is a big group of friends talking about shit together. Not everyone agrees but they are polite about it. Reddit has become a high school lunch room with each table making fun of the table next to them. No one realizing that they are not cool but thinking whatever clique they are in rules the school. This is so fucking mean girls with the burn booK.

They need to find a way to monetize without selling out to advertisers, I think they should open an online shop and use Voat to sell their merchandise, I would be okay with ads on here if it was for a VOAT sponsored shop.

We cant. One day we are going to turn on voat as quickly as we did reddit, if not quicker. It is the natural order of things
[–] Dyavin 0 points 17 points 17 points (+17|-0) ago
This. This environment is only sustainable until it gets so big that the dollar signs floating over it cause it's inevitable ruin. With the way things are going, some sort of global and local regulation of the internet will eventually kill our ability to even have things like Voat in small settings. The internet already isn't free anymore, and it's only going to get worse. People will keep fighting, but money always wins.

/b/ actually survived for a long time without SJWs. It's a pretty cool strategy: SJWs are sensitive people. Make VOAT such that sensitive people find it repulsive.
In other words, flood the front page with porn.
[–] go1dfish 0 points 7 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago
There ain't no such thing as free speech, let us instead focus on making it cheaper.

Voat should write a digital constitution visible on the front page, that way, when shit goes south, we can all point at the digital constitution and tap our feet.
[–] AnEntFromVTrees 1 point 4 points 5 points (+5|-1) ago
Who writes it? how is it going yo be amended? There is no way we are going to be able to vote on this.

Hopefully we have another good decade before that happens, but only time will tell.

I don't know about the "quicker" aspect of it.
From what I've seen, the community here seems to have a strong sense of pride in it's free speech, and how not like Reddit it is. I've never seen a community band together around not being something else quite like this.
