You need to put a small trash bag in your waste can. It dampens the energy of the impact causing the Qtip to lose momentum before clearing the rim on its way out. It then will hit the other inside wall and fall neatly into the bin. I'd estimate this will reduce your error rate to 10%-15% of throws (but that is assuming several things including size of can, distance of throw, technique of throw, etc).

You gotta first establish equal usage of both sides of the tip before the throw. The "added weight" needs to check out for the aerodynamics...
