I tried it a few years or so ago to try out Blade N Soul and it was worthless. I remember back in like 2007 there were a few VPNs that were great, but these days they are more useful as an extra layer of security than anything. They used to improve performance by removing the amount of hops across different networks that was the norm for internet traffic, but these days most networks and carriers already use pretty optimal pathing.
The only thing I've tried the last few years that made any difference was a program called xfast lan that came free with my motherboard. It actually decreased my latency in online games by 30-70ms just by traffic shaping. Basically it lets you set network priorities so that instead of the error reporting, update, Chrome, Windows Media Player etc all having the same priority as the game I was playing they take a back seat to the game's network traffic when it is running.

I haven't used it for a long time ( a year ago; trial) and don't intend to as I believe it a scam. I'll talk about that in a moment.
What games do you use it for?
Ideally, it's for all games and just depends on what game servers your selected game has and its location (choosing WTFast's servers closest to the game server).
Is it always on? (ie. affect all internet traffic)
No. Can be turned off. Also per process so web browser won't use the same connection as selected game process.
Did you receive noticeable results?
see bottom topic.
Does it do anything fishy behind the scenes? (Such as bitcoin mining, slow internet connection outside games)
Not as far as I can tell.
Concerns about the service:
VPNs (like what WTFast is referring to as "GPN") are inherently slower (higher latency) since it's not using direct routes from one end to another. It is because connections still need to go through your normal Internet connection from your ISP to wherever they need to go and adds some more for where the packets go to on the servers of the VPN service. Most of the time, your ISP will provide the route of your connection that is of good quality and say. Unless your ISP or the game server has poor routing and/or congested lines, using of VPNs won't improve your latency.
A video about VPN.
You have the right idea, but are unfortunately wrong. Yes its the same concept but two very different Results. VPNS for most people that are using them are so they can encrpyt their data through several servers around the world owned by said companies. WTFast has their own servers but their task is speed so they try to connect you to main servers through a smaller, more reliable distance.
Yeah. You could go for the argument that they specialize for "game" connections and as a result be "faster", but the fact that it just tunnels through your regular Internet connection from what your ISP provided you'll still get the same latency, if not more. The bottleneck of the connections will be the line the game server leased from their ISP, which will have all multiple connections already if the game is popular, and your line from your ISP. Even if the number of hops your connection to the game server will take using WTFast is lower compared to using without it, the game server's lines will still be congested.
When I did my testing while I used it, the route that was used with or without WTFast didn't change. The peering between countries still sucked, which what made me check solutions for it and saw the said service, and I got same or higher latency.
If it worked for you and you got 10+, 40+, 100+ ms off your latency, you should continue using it if you are satisfied.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Makes sense what you described in your concerns. My connection routes 750km's away minimum so I doubt I'd see a difference to servers within the country and I avoid international servers at all costs.

Considering they wanted to pay customers for positive reviews on Steam I'm not too confident in its quality.

I am currently in their trail period, My ping according to Speedtest.net was usually 10 to 20MS but that wasn't my ping while connecting to the Servers in Cananda(I play FFXIV ARR on a EU/US Server). My ping according to WTFast doesn't go over 20ms while running it, I'm unaware of my average ping when I'm not running WTFast but I will do test when I get home to actually give you some numbers. I can however say that the past 15 to 20 days using WTFast I've noticed no lag, dodging moves without effort, clicking shit doesn't take a while to load(such as when I summon my mount), etc.
I'll be back with numbers
I suggest you try it out in the mean time, can't hurt.
