Safe if your life depends on it, or just for peace of mind?

Most likely, they've received at least a view per day, literally and also on average.

Was it always this bad or has it just decayed so much?

Yes. I have 2 shitty videos on my channel. one of them was relatively popular, got a few hundred views on the first few days of uploading after I posted on reddit, That one video (uploaded january 11th 2015, has 1015 views) has hit nearly a view a day, and this is a guy who does not upload regularly, has one decent video that isn't unlisted, that only self promoted once.

Let's look at my creator studio, the analytics section

With the exception of the 4 day dry streak in early may, I have never had 2 days in a row of not having a view. I have 5 videos, all but 2 of which are unlisted.

Imagine if I had more than 8 subscribers, or more than 2 relevant videos, one of which was a log for a dead project.

No one who uploads videos regularly who has done any kind of self promotion, even once, has gone a day without views. simple as that
