This is actually complicated... It seems Trump sent his regular entourage on its usual route in order to keep the media from reporting he was heading for Afghanistan and alerting enemies to his being a potential target. (The media would never have reported any such thing for any prior president, but this is Trump, y'know?) So the reporter's assumption may have been reasonable.

Its all theater on Newsweek's part. The reporter takes one for the team and Newsweek gets to appear credible. Likely as not Kwong has a job waiting for her for her role in these escapades.

If you dig a little deeper, the editor put her up to it early. No one knew Trump was going to surprise troops in Afghanistan on T-day. Her story was legitimately early on Wednesday. I actually believe it was an honest mistake. She may be biased too, but in this case, her editor should have been fired instead, if her story checks out.
