As far as I'm concerned he is no American. He is a traitor to his nation and people; he should have been convicted of Treason and executed.

Execution is a little rough there don't you think? Would he have forced people to get recruited or would he have just supplied the knowledge in how to get recruited? He also was planning to teach English to the rebels, and so I don't see him directly getting involved in killing American citizens. Should he be punished? IMO, yes, but I think him being executed is going a little too far.

I mean if the United States government executed everyone who threatened national security, I believe United States would be heading towards a facist government, something many American citizens may not be proud of.

Execution is the penalty for Treason. It's the highest crime one can commit against their nation and is assigned the highest penalty. I also don't believe that Islamists are savable; Islam explicitly allows lying about one's beliefs to the infidels so how can we ever trust any claims of repentance?

Davis later said his plan was to be smuggled into Syria so he could join the Islamic State group as a recruiter and an English teacher.

Davis and his lawyer insisted he never meant harm, particularly to Americans.

I guess I am not understanding why this guy thought that being a recruiter for a terrorist organization was "not doing any harm".

These Westerners that buy into the IS propaganda are extremely broken and fantasy-oriented individuals. Chances are he really doesn't understand anything about the consequences of his actions. I'm not defending him, but at the same time I refuse to demonize the poor schmuck.

You are correct. It was not my intention to demonize him, just point out the duplicity of his beliefs.

Not saying that this guy shouldn't be jailed, but the US doesn't even blink an eye at US citizens fighting and dying in the IDF. Two Americans killed fighting for the Israeli Defense Forces

This would be a legitimate parallel if Israel was currently at war with the U.S.

It would also be legitimate if we were at war with Palestine.
