This is one of those times where I'm glad I clicked the link before pressing submit.

I was all set to go on a rant, even having started typing it, to explain that people do exactly that thing - and that it's not uncommon. (They're things like land trusts, as one of many examples.)

Then, I realized the article was much more specific. The headline is clickbait, however. Right now, you can buy an acre of rainforest (or more) to preserve it - as one small example. So, your headline is pretty fucking misleading.
