I didn't think the Soviets just let anyone leave the USSR , "... his “family fled the Soviet Union.." suspicious needs more scrutiny.
Costs a lot of money to get to New York from Ukraine, and in 1979 it was not only expensive but difficult to get across Eastern Europe to Western Europe let alone the US.. rather suspicious. Where was their point of entry? Would love much more detail on how this immigration happened.

As a Caucasian I think I would do better in Iceland than South Africa. I don't see anything wrong with his father's logic and choice as a parent. I don't know enough about the Ukraine to say if I agree on one being a better place than the other for Jews. I know as a father I would choose to go wherever I believed my children had the best chances for success.
