Drugs should be legal... We just need to put a tarriff on the foreign ones and have them inspected.
I watched a show years ago about the guy who helped the drug runners start using subs. At the time he said they were single use, made to be ditched after one delivery. Each load was worth about $100 million. When they started, they were not powered, but instead dragged behind boats, submerged, a half mile back. That way if Coast Guard showed up, they'd simply cut the lines on the sub and keep cruising. Once Coast Guard was gone, they'd go back and recover the sub via homing beacon. Pretty dang ingenious.

I was scratching my head over the same thing. Portsmouth Virginia, to the Pacific Ocean. Seems like a long trip. The article semi-explains it:
The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Harriet Lane was involved last month in a drug interdiction operation in the Pacific Ocean that led to the seizure of 5,000 pounds of cocaine, worth $69 million.
I am guessing this means there was an ongoing operation, which this vessel was taking part in, in the Pacific. However, it usually operates out of Virginia. I'm assuming it's like FBI agents from NY taking part in a large sting operation in TX. Otherwise I'm still confused.

Gulf side would be the Atlantic/Caribbean, though, right? It specifically said Pacific.
