FTA: "From a consumer point-of-view, it’s hard to imagine Alexa becoming so useful that we’d come running when it summons us"

Is it? Haven't they already achieved this with the phones we can't live without?

They were going to put it into all of comcast's remotes for every TV. But they canceled the deal because Amazon wanted exclusive access to all the voice that went to Alexa through the remote.

What's actually 'scarier' is that people are going along with all of this.

I'm a little more concerned that my pencil might become sentient and decide to take out a second mortgage on my home. Have you used Alexa? It's dumber then a fucking rock. Alexa is nothing but a data miner attached to subsidized devices masquerading as voice controls. A good 20% of the time you hear it, you never wanted it to be talking in the first place. It's always to loud, to quit, to confused, talking to long, being to fucking ANNOYING OMG STFU ALREADY!! About 50% of the time you actually asked it something, you want it to shut the fuck up and stop talking because it answered the question wrong. So maybe about 30% of the time Alexa is actively doing something you'll find it's on task. It's not just bad, it's hilariously bad. Couple that with the fact that it's put in some of the shittiest low priced crap you can buy and I don't expect it to be rivaling Deep Blue...even via cloud compute.

So lol @ mr MIT guy. The AI apocalypse is inevitable, but it won't be alexa that online's sky net. That's for fucking sure. Not unless Amazon can figure out a way to sell me cheap designer knock offs from the grave that is. Besides, it's hard to sell my personal data to the NSA if I'm dead or sent back in time to knock up my best friends mom and father the savior of the human race.
