do you really think that no one will step up to fill those roles?

Except the Republicans won't sign off on it so it will be dead in the water. Even the House's vote is not enough to stir anyone into the kind of action you're anticipating. As for your assassination theories, I pray they never come to pass.

I think if the Senate shuts down the impeachment process (which they should), it will outrage a bunch of lefties. They might protest a little bit but they don't own guns and are generally a bunch of pussies who are outraged at everything all the time anyway. So likely nothing will come of it.
I think the most plausible trigger for the civil war will be Texas turning blue and the right realizing that they can't win elections anymore. After having socialism shoved down our throats for while a few states will have enough of it and a secession movement will begin. Other right leaning citizens will wish to join these states and rural and suburban areas will revolt against the cities.
I'm not sure whether those in power on the left will attempt to use the military to quell the uprising, considering the two thirds of the military leans right, many units will likely either defect or refuse orders. So it will probably mostly be peaceful except for small skirmishes here and there. Maybe some short term power disruptions and looting in the city centers.
I think we're talking 10-20 years down the line though.
