1 doesn't necessarily require paying off witnesses. If the stairs are uneven by as much as 1/4", it will cause people to stumble on them. Those with bigger shoes than the stair run length will be more susceptible. If the perpetrator knew the relevant height, shoe size, etc of the scientists, it is possible to screw with the stairs in such a way as to have good odds of the desired victim falling.

Were there witnesses for #3? If not, it is also possible to electrocute them and make it look like lightning.

If you are up for some morbid shit, look up pictures of victims of electrocution and victims of lightning strikes. There is a matter of orders of magnitude difference between the two ("1.21 jiggawatts!").

I assume even a modestly-educated coroner can tell the difference as well using the host of other related differences.
