They never used the word autism... because that would have spoiled the "indigo" magic.
But, basically, it was as /u/NOMOCHOMO said: poorly socialized semi-autistic kids raised by single moms and might-as-well-be-single moms.
Maybe I just didn't pay attention to all that but from what I remember it was just generally gifted kids. I specifically don't remember the poorly socialized aspect as they were often referred to as the opposite, kids who were gifted but who also brought people together and had leadership qualities.
Again maybe I just wasn't looking into it too deep.

Started back in the 60s to my knowledge. Has links to age of Aquarius, procession of the equinoxes and all that shit. Least that's what my mama goat said when I bought it up in the 90s thinking I was original.

True. @shotinthedark: it was easy to find really cringey videos on the subject by Indigo mothers which would have served you and your inquiry well, but not anymore. Youtube lists only MSM documentaries now, catering to that demographics. It's the indigo Internet now.
