Without oil the 20th century modernization mainly would not have happened. I find it hilarious people protest oil. It is like protesting computers or protesting electricity generation.
We stand on oil's shoulders today. Let me help those people in California with some reasons to be thankful for oil -
7052 items are made from Petroleum. Last check.
Over half of each gallon makes stuff - less than half makes fuels for transportation.
Your grandma may be alive because her heart pill was partially made out of oil.
So was your PS4, your PC, all Blu-ray discs and their packages.
Anyway - I'm sure someone else will sell CA the oil it cannot live without. Also check out how you can drill the modern way.

The easy to get oil is gone, now we're investing a lot of energy to extract the dirty and harder to get oil, resulting in very low energy returned on energy invested and enormous risks for the environment (see Deepwater horizon). We've peaked or are about to.
The point is, we can't afford another century of oil based orgy. Oil is one the decline, the burst of the fracking bubble will serve as a reminder of that fact.

Then look at the new post about Los Angeles in 1920 and 2015. It can be done in LA County - it can be done anywhere.
Cheers! Hope you all enjoy some energy today! I refuse to protest the things that we used to build the modern world.
