All ancient civilizations seem to have had the same sort of pillars, read something about it a while ago. It's also prevalent in a lot of secret societies like freemasonry.

I wonder (doubtfully) if the heiroglyphs would still have been vibrant during the time of that painting. I am assuming Roberts was embellishing to make it look more catching to the eye.

I was thinking the same thing. There was undoubtedly more pigment on the pillars in 1846 than there is today, but the artist probably filled in some missing zones. It does give a good impression of what they must have looked like when first made. I always wonder what the roof looked like. Must have been pretty dark in there when it was roofed over.

There's a few with pigment still visible left. A small minority though and it's in patches, so yeah, he had to extrapolate and fill the rest in I would think.
