Retired fed employee here. Even joined the union and was an officer at our local. In hindsight, it was usually the low performers who joined the union and used it to stick it to management. Management had almost no ability to fire employees, and many of them were low performers too. So the union was just a process to spar with each other. Sometimes a legitimate claim was made and handled, but it was the exception, not the rule.

Government unions work against elected representatives actually representing their constituents (taxpayers). When unions donate to political campaigns and elected representatives are then in their pocket, when there are are negotiations, ultimately the union controls both sides of the negotiations. No one represents the taxpayers’ needs and interests.
