Cool story, but the details sound more like the student merely asked for calculations on wind shear that the Chief Structural Engineer hadn't considered:

Hartley didn’t know that her inquiry about how the building deals with quartering winds led to any action on LeMessurier’s part.

Which makes the Engineer look like a moron, instead of the student a genius.

That's a little harsh.

He calculated the normal weak point and it was fine. This building was different, and the corners, normally the strongest points, were actually weaker.

Such is the risk of doing what's never been done before.
