Order pretty much anything that's i5 or higher, 8GB or higher, 1080p or higher, SSD preferred, or at least a 7200 RPM HD. Skip anything that says 5200 RPM.
Ignore anything that says Chromebook. You don't want it. If you don't plan on gaming, ignore Alienware.
On their selector, filter by these options, choose cheapest as the sort. take a look, decide what is the smallest size you'll take, then place an order.
Note: The items here are one-offs, meaning that any item you find, order, or it will likely vanish later that day, etc. So don't look, pick something, and then think you'll take a day or two to think about it, because that exact one will not be there later.
They are all warrantied for 1 year by default.

Any advice on what to pick if you want to do gaming?
In general I would advise against a laptop for gaming. Desktops = more power for less money. Laptops are just not the best for gaming unless you want to spend a ton of money, and if you do get a powerful one, you will be connected to the wall outlet all the time using it because battery lift is very low.
If that is the type of work you are planning to do, I would advise whatever you get to get at least an i5, with an i7 being a better choice. Bare minimum ram would be 8gb but I would really advise 16gb min. Most will probably not need more than that. For the storage I would recommend a solid state drive over a mechanical hard drive. Mechanical drives are slower and prone to failure due to movement. Solid state drives have a much longer lifespan and are way faster. You can ignore the video card all together really. Just about anything should suit that type of work fine.
Most manufactures have a business line of laptops and typically you can get the older gen of machines that is on its way out cheaper than the new line. Dell and Lenovo would really be my only two choices. This is because of general reliability of the units and the warranty repair if there is an issue. Both of these offer next day onsite repair for hardware issues. The other manufactures typically require you send in the device to their repair center.

I work on computers for my job. Fuck HP, Acer, Toshiba, and low end Lenovo. And for fuck sake, DO NOT BUY FROM WALMART OR BEST BUY. Holy fuck, the amount of shit I see from those two stores.
I might also state that I haven't seen many of the newer Toshiba laptops. The older models have not aged well.
For under $1,000 I would suggest a Dell or a higher end Lenovo. I have a Lenovo from 2013. I have abused the laptop left right and center. All I get back is, "That's all you got, pussy?"
If you are willing to spend the money, the beefed up toughbook styled laptops are pretty great. They are often used by police and aside from shooting them, they don't really fail.
This is only from a repair techs perspective, take that as you will.

Second what this chap says
Id look for a second hand lenovo thinkpad. Update to an ssd and maybe some xtra memory and you will have a decent laptop that wont fail you.

Not a problem. At this point, we get so many HPs I time myself to see how fast I can disassemble and reassemble the laptop.

According to "PC Magazine" they actually preferred in one issue, an Apple, but for gaming, a pc laptop you can afford. DECRAPIFY it!
The PC laptops all have malware pre installed. I bet not one person here can name one that does not.
