There are quick opening safes, if you're so inclined.
Personally, my dad just taught us gun safety when we were like 5 or 6. You can ask to see it, but never touch it if dad isn't around. He showed us they kill so we knew the consequences. The loaded gun was a shotgun tucked behind a door against a wall. A little hard for a kid to reach and dig out.
My kid is still working on rolling over and not punching himself in the face, so I have some time to finalize my plans.
I think exposing them to guns and getting them very familiar is the most important part.
