I spend some time in food bank in Toronto years ago-lots of people in actual need but even back then there was increasing crowd of you-know-who just freeloading.Today it's even worse. There is no point in donating, you are just encouraging freeloading.

There's a local woman who runs a little operation out of her home, and has a good system of choosing who needs help. When my girlfriend's hard working family was being denied assistance that was going to illegals and criminals, they were able to not starve because of that local woman. You need a car to get anywhere around here, so you can do the demographic math.
I would never donate to a large corporate kitchen or anything like that. Help the people who actually need help.

If you donate to a non-catholic, local church, it stays local. Plus, most illegals will not go in for Baptist/Methodist/Lutherin/Etc freebies, ever.
As my grandmother always said, "Charity begins at home."
