Moon 44 is a cool little outer space science fiction flick made by Roland Emmerich, who went on to make Independence Day.

Europa Report (haven't watched yet, but gets good word) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2051879/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

FAQ About Time Travel (comedy from the UK) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0910554/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Ex Machina, Predestination, Source Code and Looper are all good sci-fi movies with a fairly original premise.

Less well known recent sci-fi movies I liked are Coherence, The Signal, Timecrimes, Blindness, and Europa Report.

Do you consider THX-1138 "same old same old?"

I really like Sunshine and consider it to be a spiritual sequel to Event Horizon

If you don't mind older stuff I loved Space Hunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone It still holds up after watching it recently

Also Battle Beyond the Stars

And for more modern stuff I thought Guardians of the Galaxy was the best space opera since Return of the Jedi

Young Ones

The Signal (2014)

Someone already mentioned Black mirror (its a must watch for sci fi fans imo)

The One I Love

Blade Runner

The first Matrix movie (the sequels just didn't have the same feel or anything really new to them).

Dune

Outland (Sean Connery is a mining colony sheriff, and a bad ass)

Cyber City Oedo 808 (three part anime series set in the future)

Akira

Ghost In The Shell

...Bit of an Anime rush at the end there, but then most of the good Sci-Fi I have watched in the last few years, has been animated.
