Knife attacks can be quite deadly. Does anyone know a statistic on the fatalities of knive vs gun crimes?

When I was taking my CHL class the instructor said if an assailant is closer than 25' and has a knife while your gun is holstered, run! Even if you don't mess up the draw (which is hard because you've got a crazed motherfucker with a knife running at you) you can't get it out in time.

EDIT: added a letter

I think the idea of "rush a gun, run from a knife" isn't that the knife is more dangerous, it's that you CAN run from a knife.

I don't know statistics, and they wouldn't really compare due to different gun control laws, but in China they have mass stabbings. People will go into schools and start stabbing all the kids.

You can miss vital organs with a gun. Knives are much more personal and precise.

So when are we going to sit down and have the Knife Control discussion? Shouldnt there be background checks?

Only for knives that are black, are over 5" long (machetes, sickles, and clurits are ok), or fit on a rifle bayonet lug.

If only there was a big sign that said "Knife-Free Zone" on the front door, this tragedy never would have happened.

KNIVES KILL PEOPLE - WE NEED KNIFE CONTROL

Imagine how many lives could be saved if we required everyone to get a permit and register with a government agency before purchasing knives? It's one of the greatest failures of our government and society that we can't protect ourselves from people who can't control themselves with a knife.

Wait... that doesn't make sense..... it's obviously the person who did it - not the knife.

Well we can't blame "gun violence" for this one. Maybe we'll begin focusing more on "knife violence" or "sword violence".

Or maybe we'll fess up to the fact that we have an epidemic of violence in this country that is fueled by underfunded mental health services and over prescribed mental health drugs.

I can't help but think that this might have been related to the homeschooling. These kids didn't go out of the house much, and weren't allowed to be with other kids. In an echo chamber like that, who knows what mental state they were in.

Eh. Who knows. The only home scholled kids I know are Quakers!

What a sad story.. How come such young people turn to such violent methods.

Probably bought the knives at one of those god damn travelling Knife Shows. No background check required...

Maybe we can actually discuss mental illness now.

A reasonable comment, thank you.

The point they are making is that, had this been a gun, the incident would no doubt be used to argue for more gun control.

I think we can all agree that what happened to that family is a terrible, goddamned shame. But this is a result of mental illness, and that is what needs to be addressed, not the weapons that were involved (which is what the snarky comments are pointing out.) It doesn't matter if they were killed with a gun, a knife, a hammer, or a Wii remote. Genuinely disturbed people will always find a way to harm others in one way or another, so our government and our healthcare system both need to step up and start formulating a better plan to help these folks with mental problems. Simply banning guns, knives, or bricks isn't going to magically stop sick people from killing each other.
