Is there any reason you can't carry a rifle?

We was booze cruising the back trails behind his house. We had my AR in his buggy, but that was 100 or so yards behind us

So you don't need a new pistol you need to front sling that rifle when you are out there.
The 10mm is really nothing more than a 357 Mag in Auto Form. It fires the same weight slug at the same velocity. I just don't get all this crap abut carrying hand gun for self defense against animals. Wild Horses, Wild Mules, Bears, and even a mountain lion are hard to kill and a hand gun just don't cut it. You should be carrying a 12 or 10 gauge shot gun loaded with slugs.

357 is basically a 9mm. I’m not out hunting. I’m not carrying a long arm around larping like I’m in some jungle safari. I’m out exploring parts of the country playing cowboy and exploring mines. Not looking for a gunfight
Shotgun with a sling with slugs and buck. I’m surprised having a close call like that you’d think a pistol would suffice. I carry a 357 or nine always and if I feel the need a shotgun. Wife is usually with me too and she’s got her nine as well ALWAYS. After a weird experience in the PNW I’ve been looking into upgrading the 870 to a semi 12 gauge.

Lever-action rifle and a revolver both in .45 Colt with hollowpoint bullets. .45 Colt brass (at least the Starline stuff) can be safely loaded to magnum pressure levels, and a .45 bullet is going to make a serious impression on even a 1000lb animal.
