Cardinal Newman converted to Catholicism after he wrote that. You failed to disclose that essential fact.
That is bearing false witness.
Cardinal Gibbon was writing on the paganism of Rome where Christians, ie Catholics-since they were the only Christians in existence until 1054, practiced the Faith taught to them by the Apostles. Tons of pre-Constantine Early Fathers of the Church write about the same Catholic teaching that is taught today.
Put it this way: If the Jews were hypothetically to conquer Christianity and Christendom completely, they’d be susceptible to the charge of retaining Christian elements in their teaching and practice. But (((they))) would not intend so. It's nearly impossible to eradicate the preceding cultural context when a body of people find acceptance in the culture they replace. Do Catholics worship Apollo? No. Do Catholics worship Neptune? No. Do Catholics even worship Mary? No. In fact it is a sin to. No Catholics do the very reasonable practice of asking others to pray form them whether they are alive here in earth or alive with Christ in heaven. Are you an idolater if you ask your mom to pray for you today assuming she’s alive here in earth? No. And neither are Catholics idolaters who ask friends living in Heaven with Christ to intercede on their behalf. If you don’t need to have saints intercede for you who live with Christ in heaven because Christ answers your prayers directly, then you don’t need intercessors here on earth. But you know full well that you do ask your mom and dad and siblings to pray for you. And if you deny it, there’s millions of Protestants that do request prayers.
Why is that? Because you feel your prayers are not getting answered. So, why stop at asking sinful human beings here on earth when you can ask holy souls in heaven? Or do you deny the resurrection of the dead?
So, words have consequences. I’d have you look long and hard at calling Christ’s Church the whore of Babylon before it doesn’t go well with you in the last day.

You have no understanding. Amazing the cognitive dissonance from Catholics. Moral superiority when they perform traditions of man and follow man made doctrine. They claim to be chirstian yet follow a man in a silly hat and eat stale crackers.
Read the Bible. Pray for understanding. "come out of her my people!" Revelation 18.

What traditions of man do you speak of?
