You wanna get your pops a father's day gift? Give him a voucher/gift certificate for moving services. Even if (as you've said) he won't, it's often because that first move is a scary one. Putting a number on it solidifies its significance and can act as a catalyst. It says "not only do I want you to be safe, dad, I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is."

Based on the comments here (and others that are curious), I'm all but certain your old man's in California. Both the XDM and the 1911 aren't on their "safe" roster.

Must be a shitty situation for you OP. I wish you and your pops well. Any man that appreciates a well-made 1911 is all right in my book.

My condolences.

If I absolutely had to go with that God-awful roster, I'd choose one of the variants made by Springfield Armory. I'm pretty sure this one is "approved": https://www.springfield-armory.com/products/1911-range-officer-45-acp/

@MrBoutros, if he is in MA the info you are getting may be in error. Here is a link to one of the better stores, plenty of Colts -

How on earth is a 1911 banned? It's an ancient design with low capacity... must be a shitty state.
