There already are good drivable vehicle mods for New Vegas, and Skyrim. And a bunch of mobile fast travel point style vehicle mods for all Bethesda games.

It seems like a silly way to do it, since they already have code for vertibirds. Couldn't they just make a reskinned vertibird that doesn't... verti?

The article mentions that the vertibirds were just pre-rendered animations that did not operate within the game's physics engine.
