I believe it is the explanation for Clown World. We have been transported to another world line in which many things are inverse to us. We see everything as upside down whereas the natives seem to see nothing out of place. We must discover how to return to our original world line.

Is this based on some science fiction novel?

I took the idea of world lines from a show called Steins;Gate. It's about time travel among other things. It has a concept where you change the past and are then shifted to a different world line where that change occurred. It's more or less the multiverse theory. It's as good an explanation for Clown World as anything.

Reminds me of a dream I had as a 10 year old girl where I transported through some weird loop with lights on it, made by monks who wanted to invoke the apocalypse. I went to a world similar as ours but after a while I realised the horrible truth: it was a different world, one without plants.
Yeah, I'm weird. But I'd choose that plantless world over our reality any time. God, it's just the most ridiculous time to have ever existed and I'm afraid it even gets worse in the years to come.
