The idea that America has been a melting pot of non-Europeans since the begining isn't quite right though. The floodgates weren't open until 1965, which is pretty late in the game.
People "melt" better when they're not immigrating by the tens of thousands and forming their own segregated communities. It's easier to achieve that melting pot ideal with less immigration, not more. Migrating families of immigrants makes it harder for them to act as individuals and makes it easier for their culture to migrate with them.

Agreed, controlled immigration is the way to go. A basic 'Litmus test' like learning enough of the language for emergencies, learning the history, learning the reasoning behind the Constitution etc.
And because our bureaucracy is incredibly inefficient and sodden with racketeering, unfortunately they need to wait in line too.
I like expanding technical Visas. That is how we are going to get the honest ones with skills.
