I think it was replaced with entitlement. I'm wondering what happened to you that has you asking this question. Did you get your feelings hurt? It seems empathy is age related. I find the older and more mature have it, and the very young are naturally empathetic.

Well at least you still have empathy even though it appears others around you lost it. It is something valuable and keeps you real. Maybe one more drink is needed to get to happy.

Consumerism promotes the importance of the individual over the community
Yep. Go to a place where consumerism isn't as important, close knit communities, and you'll find much more empathetic people.
Honestly though, sometimes that gets annoying. I like the lonely feel of a big city, where no one cares. You can go about your business, stare at the clouds, sit silently with a book. I find often in those small communities, while they are empathetic, they expect a lot when it comes to interactions and contributions. They're also extremely inefficient.

Growing populations and the digital era. We live in a fast food world, and we are more disconnected than we ever were. It's sad.

It's only sad because the internet is supposed to connect us all. The reason no one cared about things that happened outside of their own country is that they never saw it. Now you can see it all the time. You do see it all the time. But there's still such an emotional disconenct it doesn't matter. It's a real shame.

It doesn't connect because we constantly see it. We grow numb to it. Just like looking at gore. Eventually you don't give a fuck about who they were. Or the fact that he was on his way to his daughters birthday party with presents.. It's just another dead guy.

It still exists in ways. People are empathic toward national tragedy. People are still empathic if it costs them very little. For the most part I would say empathy is less because people do not reward it adequately enough.
