After over 18 years on the Board, Eric Schmidt is not seeking re-election at the expiration of his current term on June 19, 2019. He will continue as a technical advisor to Alphabet.
Dude is 64 years old. Seems like he choosing what to focus on.

That’s still almost an average age (average was 56.9) for CEO’s of Fortune 500 companies. Adelson, Buffet, Penske, Werner, Miller, Zucaro are all at least 10-15 years older as CEOs. It could be health reasons or it could be that he just wanted to do something else like you said, or he could be needing to devote time to developing a defense strategy for what is likely to happen soon. Not a single mentally competent person believes Google hasn’t been doing shady illegal activities the past decade or more.
