In case you don't know Kirkegaard is actually one of the great philosophers of our time. And is widely regarded as being the father of existentialism - for better or worse - and was a direct influence to other existential philosophers like Sartre and Heidegger. Although the actual quote given reminds me more of Albert Camus's concept of absurdism. Which is also quite interesting.
K's highly recommend reading although don't expect to understand what the hell he's going on about straight away. Look up the beginning passage of Sickness unto Death to see what I mean. Also he was a massive religious nutjob which I suppose some people might have issue with nowadays.
I'd do a loose outline of what he was about but I figure that's what Wikipedia is for.
Of course, that said, intellectuals wanking around with continental philosophy concepts while hanging around talking and smoking in cafes, not actually doing that much is possibly part of the reason why the world is so fucked up at the moment.

I always have this scene from Independence Day in my head, where the ravers at the Welcome Aliens party on the rooftop get zapped the first.
