They hate whites, so if you are a white male take that into account.

I have been summoned to this thread as resident island nigger.
Realistically, you should expect to have a hard time.
http://www.city-data.com/forum/hawaii/. Read everything here. There is much honest discussion here from locals about the realities of living in Hawaii.
Now for your questions:
Crime
In general, Hawaii is a low crime place compared to most places in the US. We have a lot of petty theft and domestic violence but not so much random murders and muggings. Meth was introduced by the military and has been a serious community issue ever since. Homelessness is also a big problem here.
niggers
Hawaii is majority Asian and so you will be entering a situation where you as a white are nigger tier until proven otherwise. People in hawaii are openly racist and racial. They have no problem telling you that you aren't welcome and they think you should go home. They fully expect you to assimilate. Hawaii does have a significant population of whites on some islands but they are culturally diverse and you might not find the racial camaraderie you expect. As far as nigger niggers, Hawaii is 1% black but we got Micronesians by the thousands and they cause all the problems that traditional niggers do but somehow manage to be dumber. Polynesians (including native Hawaiians) are more of a mixed bag. They are generally as intelligent as whites but not as motivated and have different ideals of progress. Separatist aren't as prominent as the media pretends.
tech scene
Non existent. Unless you are capable of being self employed you probably will not stable work in your field. If you do find such a job, plenty of east Asians already to outcompete you.
academic culture
Not as liberal as the mainland. Colleges are currently downsizing. High schools desperately need teachers but Hawaii public schools are shit. If you can accept a modest life, you could probably make it with a charter school in a rural community. However, culture shock will still come into play.
In general, we recommend anyone that is thinking of moving to Hawaii to vacation for many months in different communities and have many months of savings. Most people that try to move here fail and go home broke after a year or two.

Lived in Princeville on Kauai back in mid 80s. It was nice there, but then again, it’s a very expensive part of Hawaii, so, of course it would be.
I have heard if you’re white, you will not be liked, and unless you could afford to live in a place like Princeville, it’s bound to be an issue. But, since I never had to deal with that, can’t verify, but it makes sense. The only issue I had, was being in my mid twenties and getting rock fever, I did love the beauty, but I missed sidewalks and city life at night. Also, it’s tough to explain, but living on an island made me anxious in a way that is beyond describing.

noted, thanks. Due to the specialization that I am working on, and the work that I've done, getting a high-paying job should not be an issue.
The anxiety thing is scary though. I've lived on an island my entire life
