I think I'm under estimating how bad the typical American diet really is.

Its not so much about what you eat as how much you eat. Its all about calories in and calories out. Ive seen videos of people who go on a multi week trip or something where they are much more active, hiking and whatnot. They also eat twice as much and mainly crap like McDonalds and they would still lose weight. Most fat people are fat because they sit on their ass all day doing absolutely nothing active and only getting up to get more food.

It's hard for me to understand because I have to work really hard to make sure I eat enough. I'm constantly worried about if I'm actually eating enough. I actually have to take weight gainer powder at 1200 calories per serving in order to meet my daily requirement. If I don't do this I lose muscle and weight. I lift weights and do cardio 7 days a week though.
Ive heard people say exercise helps you listen to your body more, so you only eat when you stomach is really hungry. Lazy people are always hungry which seems counter intuitive. I also think because they dont get pleasure from exercise their brain needs to get it from elsewhere so they use food as like a drug to feel better.

Pot tarts, donuts, cupcakes, or like for breakfast. A litter of cola for liquids between breakfast and lunch. Quadruple cheese burger with fries for lunch, with another liter of cola. A salad for dinner because I'm on a diet.
I'm guessing it's something like that.

Sour cream and 1/2 pound of cheese and bacon because I deserve it!

Calorie surplus, that's it.

I'm a pretty serious weight lifter and I constantly have to fight to make sure I'm eating enough. I physically cannot put enough food in me to meet my calorie requirements, it won't fit. I supplement with weight gainer powder which is 1200 calories per serving but I think most days I still burn more calories than I consume and I still stay at the same weight. Its weird.

I remember seeing an article somewhere that showed how much you would have to eat at fast food places in order to get to the 2000 calories daily recommended and most of the fast food places weren't that much more than a regular meal plus a little bit more stuff. So I would imagine reading fast food for lunch everyday combined with breakfast and dinner plus cokes and coffee during the day and unless you exercise you are now fat. Here is a similar graphic. https://storage.googleapis.com/titlemax-media/2018/04/what-1500-calories-looks-like-25-fast-food-restaurants-3.png

I guess it's just hard for me to believe that even eating 3000 calories a day would make a person really fat. It seems to me you would need to eat 5000 calories per day to get and stay obese. That's a shit ton of food.

But it is cumulative. Where you should be eating 2000-2500 calories you eat 3500-4500 and then you get used to eating to be full instead of eating for health. So every lunch and dinner you eat at or nearly what you should have all day for two or more meals every day and the fat just builds and builds. Then as the person gets heavier they stop doing any exercises they might have been doing so that makes them put on even more weight. Next thing you know years have passed and what was an extra 20 or 30 pounds becomes 100, 150.... And then an even bigger explosion.
