My evolution: Alternative to jam band to electronic. I've been really into bass music since 2012. Check out Bassnectar and Tipper.
I primarily listen to metal. I have been listening to a lot of indie an folk recently. I will listen to most things there is a lot of rap and country that I don't care for. I tend to like music when it is doing something different from the norm, like having different instruments than the standard guitar, bass, and drums.
I enjoy listening to music in other languages, even though I don't understand the lyrics. It helps to hear the vocals like they are another instrument. One band that I really like for example is called Wagakki Band. Its rock with traditional Japanese instruments. Here is one of their songs called Iroha Uta.

Lindsey Stirling is so damn hot.
And something about the violin mashed with dubstep is just awesome.
