I never really appreciated Zappa ! But when I was in Sweden I remember a family I stayed with and the father lived Zappa ! He showed me an encyclopedia reference that called him one of the best musicians ever, something like that. It was quite an accolade. So I made it a point to listen to it! Well ...it's like drinking expensive Cognac, its wasted on me!

I can't get into a lot of his stuff myself but I adore Hot Rats. It's one of his most accessible works so I would recommend you give that a listen

Frank was a great musician but he was a shit human being. He was fond of saying pithy things like that, but he wasn't much of a deep thinker. He was incredibly selfish, self-indulgent, and a terrible husband and father.

Interesting! His story might go a little deeper though Into the Heart of Darkness but I'm trying not to get into the negativity of things. It is good to see that you have perspective on the matter. But unlike many of the players back then who were just actors and not musicians Frank was an amazing guitarist

Frank was a unique composer in general. His first album with the Mothers of Invention was a double album and inside gave numerous acknowledgements of influence, including Igor Stravinsky and Edgar Varese. One also hears his use of sprechstimme, musique concrete, and falsetto which figure prominently in his work. His composition was extremely complicated and very sophisticated, which is why he could only hire extremely talented musicians who could keep up with him. The man was definitely an American original who found more of a home abroad than in the US. Here he's known mostly for his wild rock and roll show, dissonance, novelty songs, and the song "Valley Girl", which was a Top 40 song in 1982. Unfortunately, his reputation as a serious composer hasn't caught on here as it has in Europe.

It is important to separate the artist from his art. There are numerous artists I've abandoned because I found they were too degenerate to enjoy once I found out what sorts of disgusting things they have done (like pedophilia), but while Frank was a terrible human being and was a bad father to his kids, who still have problems dealing with their adulthood 25 years after their father's demise, his work is transcendent and unique.
