>Globally

>Looked at 195 countries

>Including those that burn rubber tires for heat and shit in their front yard

Now, remove the outliers in the bell curve and see what you get.

I didn't see anything particularly groundbreaking in this report, nor in the study, and of course it's correlational. However, I also believe science ought to be used and be useful for improving the lives of people, and the takeaway message here is "eat more vegetables". One frustrating part of dealing with people who have unhealthy diets is not, necessarily, getting them to stop consumption of sugars and foods they're eating in unhealthy quantities, but the sheer impossibility of getting them to eat vegetables.

There are also some specific issues in the study, in that it correlates whole grains with fiber, when you can dispense with grains (as in the case of people who have celiac) and replace them with non-gluten grains or vegetables for the necessary fiber. Nevertheless, if you want to optimize your health, it is absolutely necessary to consume more vegetables, replace excessive meat with smaller amounts of eggs and fish, and stop inhaling sugar. This is the message I've always seen consistently repeated over and over: Stop. Inhaling. Sugars. More fiber, primarily from vegetables, is better. You have to replace bad foods with good ones, and that's often the part that's difficult with unhealthy or obese people.

And, to be clear, it's not necessarily the same: Someone who eats within their caloric limits (Basal metabolic rate) and doesn't gain weight, but still eats a diet primarily of McDonalds, is still at greater long term risk for metabolic disease. Nowhere near as much as obese patients, but for the love of all that's holy eat more vegetables and less crap.

There are, of course, places where the cost of healthy food is higher than what you would find in a grocery store, or the market, even. Its not an excuse, but there's that, too.
