Not choked, but kinda entangled when I was a drunk passenger and frequently frustrated by the slow speed of some of them.

It was a clever solution to a safety requirement of the time. If memory serves it had something to do with having this negate an airbag requirement of some kind.

Yup, though I'm not sure I can agree with 'clever.'

But, yes... It was mandated that they do one or the other, until the airbags became mandated.

I mean, for them it was. It was cheaper to introduce this as a stopgap than to build the entire airbag system and integrate it.

For a while, the vehicle had to either have airbags or automatic seat belts. It was horrible.

I didn’t know it was one or the other. Come to think of it the vehicles I owned that had the hat removers didn’t have airbags. I learned something new, thankie!

My little Ford tempo saved my life a couple times in high school. One lady t-boned me as she was exiting the freeway. Dont know why they didn't salvage the car after that. Later, I was in a head on. Car was sent to salvage yard after that.

That damned automatic seatbelt saved my life both times.

I put mine on, every time. It's not something I need done for me.

Oh, I do now. But in high school, I was very dumb. To be fair, I'm still very dumb, but not as dumb as I was.

I miss having mine stick halfway up so that I had only a lapbelt. No way I was paying almost what the car was worth to get that shit fixed. Today I would have to or get a ticket for no seatbelt.

I can relate! I had one that'd stick every so often. You MIGHT have been able to fix it by oiling the track - or greasing it with white lithium grease. Maybe... Some just sucked so bad, looking at you Ford, that the servo motor would die.
